About this book

A classic comedic novel first published in 1922 (also known as The Girl on the Boat in the UK). The "maid" is red-haired, dog-loving Wilhelmina "Billie" Bennett, and the three men are her long-suffering suitor Bream Mortimer, her secretly engaged fiancé Eustace Hignett (a shy, poetry-writing soul dominated by his formidable mother), and Eustace's dashing cousin Sam Marlowe, who falls for Billie at first sight. All four end up aboard an ocean liner headed for England, joined by the capable and elephant-gun-wielding Jane Hubbard, who is smitten with Eustace. What follows is pure Wodehouse — a whirlwind of romantic misunderstandings, family chaos, a bulldog with a mind of its own, and a suit of armour.

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse

Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881–1975) was an English author and one of the most widely read humorists of the 20th century. Born in Guildford, he was educated at Dulwich College and went on to publish over 90 books, 40 plays, and 200 short stories across a career spanning more than seven decades. He is best known for creating the beloved characters Jeeves and Bertie Wooster. His prose style — a brilliant mix of Edwardian slang, literary allusions, and razor-sharp comic timing — has been compared to comic poetry. He took dual British-American citizenship in 1955 and was knighted just weeks before his death in 1975
